(The words and terms are in order of when you will hear them) Learning curve – The time it takes you to learn something. You can have a big or small learning curve. “Please let me know because this is a big learning curve.” 5 blocks BY 5 blocks – 1) BLOCK – the area or distance in a city between streets. 2) BY – when you talk about the dimensions of a square or rectangle. It’s just… – (Fluency Builder) “It’s just a big party.” You can’t beat that – We say this when something is very good for us. Crippling (adj) – Something that causes you to not move or think well - to cripple (v)/ a cripple (n)- “Nerves can be a crippling thing.” To give/make a great impression – (Collocation) to present yourself well to somebody “You want to give/make a great first impression.” Let me go back (Story-telling Expression) – When you want to talk about something that happened before a certain point in your story. “Let me go back and let you know that I have 12 years experience at this point.” Let me give you an example – We say “Let me…” often to sound more friendly Era –A time period labeled by a certain characteristic or trend “Think back at the Mike Tyson era.” A lamb going into the slaughter – (Expression) When you feel very afraid about something you’re about to do. “Sometimes we feel like a lamb going to the slaughter going into an interview.” In my mind… – The way you think about something “In my mind, I had already worked there.” To beat (out) – To win against an opponent. -beat one opponent; beat out a group- “I think I beat out 24 candidates.” From the heart – To do something genuinely.
