(The words and terms are in order of when you will hear them)
You do what you gotta do– To do what’s necessary to accomplish the task
Let me + verb… – Introduction to giving your opinion
“Let me share a personal story.”
Payoff(n) (v)– the return on your investment. The benefit you receive from doing something
“Right now, there’s little payoff for all of my hard work.”
Don’t give up– (Phrasal Verb)
“Keep moving forward and don’t give up.”
… but onto + noun.– To continue something after being interrupted (normally by yourself)
“…but onto my story.”
Nasty – a synonym for “disgusting”
A headache to ___– Something is difficult or complicated to do
“It’s just a real headache to go by bus.”
The lesser of two evils– (Expression) Two options are bad, but one is less bad
“It’s the lesser of two evils at that point.”
to be drenched(adj) – To be very very wet
“I use an umbrella so I don’t arrive at my students’ house completely drenched.”
Proverb (n) – An old, common saying that often give a lesson
“I was once sad when I had no shoes until I met the man who had no feet.” (proverb)
Let that sink in– (Expression) Think about something more deeply to understand it better.
Let’s be honest– (Fluency Builder) to give your honest opinion
“Let’s be honest, some of you are in difficult situations to live in.”
MMA (Mixed Martial Arts)– You don’t do something anymore that you used to do
“My favorite sport is mixed martial arts, MMA..”
